Same Red Line, wrong branch. Take Veirs Mill Road.
Wheaton and Rockville are both Red Line towns, but on opposite arms of the U. The honest route between them is the road the state built for it: Veirs Mill Road, six miles, door to door. Call ahead and the bay is ready when you get here; walk-ins wait their turn.
Why nobody rides the Metro from Wheaton to Rockville
The Red Line
Wheaton station sits on the Glenmont arm of the line, second from the end. Rockville sits on the Shady Grove arm, also second from the end. The two are joined only by riding the whole U through downtown Washington: two dozen stops. Wheaton’s station is a fine thing (its escalators are the longest single span in the Western Hemisphere), just not for this trip.
Veirs Mill Road
MD-586 runs 5.78 miles from Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, right past Westfield Wheaton and the Metro station, west to First Street in Rockville. The shop is on N Stonestreet Avenue, along the east side of the rail line near where Veirs Mill arrives. About six miles; call it a quarter of an hour outside rush hour.
No car for the day? Two Ride On routes run the same corridor seven days a week: Route 40 straight up Veirs Mill Road from Wheaton station to Rockville station and Montgomery College, and Route 48 from Wheaton station to Rockville station by way of Veirs Mill, Bauer Drive and Norbeck Road. Ride On is currently fare-free. There is no MARC station in Wheaton; the nearest Brunswick Line stop is Kensington.
1950s houses, 2020s cars
Wheaton is an unincorporated community of about 52,000 people at the 2020 census, its downtown the triangle of Veirs Mill Road, University Boulevard and Georgia Avenue. Much of it went up in the 1950s (Cape Cods, ranches and split-levels with a driveway out front), and it is still a driving place: recent Census estimates put more than half of workers driving alone, with a commute of over half an hour and two cars in the typical household.
Cars that do that kind of daily mileage on Veirs Mill, Georgia Avenue and the Beltway come in for the predictable things: brakes, alignment after a pothole, a check- engine light, an A/C that gave up in July. All of it is quoted before the work, by ASE Master Certified technicians, in English, Spanish or French.
Where Wheaton drivers go for what
Maryland State Inspection
Needed to sell, buy or title a used car. Done at licensed private stations (Karnon Automotive is one), with the result sent to the MVA electronically and repairs plus re-inspection under one roof.
VEIP emissions test
State-run only. From Wheaton the nearer of the county’s two stations is the Silver Spring one at 2121 Industrial Parkway in White Oak; the Derwood station (15910 Chieftain Ave), roughly nine miles away by way of Veirs Mill Road and Rockville Pike, is the one that pairs with a repair trip to Rockville. Fail it, and the check-engine repair happens here before the retest.
MVA counter
The closest branch is MVA Kemp Mill at 1327 Lamberton Dr in Silver Spring, about two miles from downtown Wheaton, for titling, registration and licensing. Road tests and the self-service emissions kiosk are at the full-service Gaithersburg branch.
