Silver Spring and Rockville sit on opposite arms of the Red Line’s U, so the train is no shortcut. The road is: Georgia Avenue to Wheaton, Veirs Mill Road into East Rockville, and a shop you can call for an appointment or walk into.
Same line, opposite branch
Silver Spring station on Colesville Road is a Red Line and MARC stop, but it is on the Glenmont arm; Rockville is on the Shady Grove arm, twenty-two stations away through downtown Washington. Nobody makes that ride for a brake job. Drive instead: Georgia Avenue (MD-97) north from downtown to Wheaton, where it meets Veirs Mill Road (MD-586) beside the Wheaton Metro; Veirs Mill then runs 5.78 miles west into Rockville, ending at First Street, three-quarters of a mile from N Stonestreet Avenue. About ten to twelve miles, roughly twenty minutes without traffic. The Beltway-to-I-270 way is an option in the other rush hour.
Once the car is with us, the commute into the city is easy: Rockville station, one block away, runs direct Red Line trains to Metro Center and MARC trains to Union Station. By bus the connection is Ride On Route 9 from Silver Spring station to Wheaton, then Route 40 or 48 on to Rockville station, all fare-free at the moment.
One-car households and a lot of city miles
Silver Spring is the county’s big unincorporated downtown next to the District: about 81,000 people in the census-designated place alone at the 2020 count, and a far larger area that uses the name. It is one of the less car-dependent places on this list: recent Census estimates put fewer than half of workers driving alone, more than one in eight on transit, and one car as the most common household count. That single car works hard on Colesville Road, East-West Highway and the Beltway, and it usually cannot be spared for a week.

Two different inspections. The VEIP emissions test is state-run, and for Silver Spring the nearest station is the Silver Spring Vehicle Emissions Testing Station at 2121 Industrial Parkway in White Oak, not Derwood, which is fifteen miles the other way. MVA White Oak, the full-service branch, is next door at 2131 Industrial Parkway. The Maryland State Inspection needed to sell, buy or title a used car is done at licensed private stations like Karnon Automotive, with the result sent to the MVA electronically; and when a car fails the emissions test, the check-engine or emissions-system repair that gets it through the retest is a shop job, done here.
